Exeter travel company increases sales 40% during recession

Exeter based niche travel agency, The Specialist Travel Consultancy (STC), has bucked national trends to see sales increase by 40% in 2009. Based in Dix's Field, the company specialises in expeditions and adventure tours for schools, and has recently launched a service aimed at active and adventurous families looking for holidays with a difference.

2009 was a tough year for the travel industry with UK spending on overseas holidays slumping by more than 10% in the first three quarters (Office of National Statistics1). † STC Director Adrian Ferraro, 34, puts the company's success down to its ability to add value to their clients' travel experience. "Whether it's a school, a family or an individual, our clients demand more from their travel. It's about matching needs and aspirations and ensuring a quality experience".

School Adventures

As the company's name suggests, the trips on offer are not your average sun, sea and sand holidays, nor are they your usual French exchange. 2010 will see their school clients take students on educational adventures and expeditions to destinations as far afield as Morocco, Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Turkey and India. Some trips involve trekking to over 4000m; others see students helping out in rural African schools.

New families' service launched

The recent launch of their dedicated family service is already proving popular with families undertaking anything from camping safaris in Namibia to adventure tours of China. "Travelling as a family to adventurous destinations can be very enriching and rewarding", says Adrian, who has travelled extensively and trekked in Turkey and Morocco with his young family, "A lot of people put off travelling with their kids, waiting for the Äòright age', but there is no such thing. What's important is to get out there together and discover the culture, wildlife and scenery of the world".

One off adventures

The company also designs and arranges bespoke one off adventures. The latest being a 26 day 4x4 expedition to circumnavigate the Taklamakan Desert in Western China. Three fully equipped Land Cruisers and expert guides will see a group of six friends travel over 5,600km around the world's 15th largest desert. †Adrian says, "This is certainly one of our more unusual bookings, and what a trip! But everyone has their own level of adventure, and it is important for us to remember that".
